A lot depends on what you pay for gas & electricity, and what your hot water usage patterns are.

Here in the midwest, gas water heaters are more economical.

If you live in a place where the electric utility uses water or wind power, go for the electric heater. If not, well, both are apt to be pretty expensive and you'll be in the same boat with many others. Whichever kind of water heater, you can help control the costs by wrapping it so it doesn't lose heat into the surrounding air.

being an electrician, and seeing the whopping rising cost of electricity there is NOOOO comparison. Gas was always cheaper to begin with, and they last much much longer than electric, but since electricity is going to double from what it was a year ago, in the next 2-3 years.. buy gas for sure now

It depends on when you ask. When I built my house, gas was cheaper. Now electric is cheaper...I am told anyway. I would recommend the tankless water heaters, either gas or electric as a way to really cut costs.

For this area, electric is cheaper... for most of the U.S., gas is cheaper. Depends on your local utility rates.
