I understand the tradgedy of New Orleans, I live in Louisiana but does anybody remember that Mississippi was almost blown off the map?? I'm from MS. I lived on the Gulf Coast and there is absolutly nothing left of my old stomping grounds. I just wish Mississippi could get a little more "News" coverage. New Orleans' problems came from the levee...Mississippi was from the Hurricane, "Katrina". I guess since Mississippi folks don't constantly have their hand out begging for help from the world they just don't get noticed. Thanks for allowing me to blow off just a little bit of steam.

Blueghost...I know what you're saying about Florida. It's just that Katrina didn't stop with the Gulf Coast.

It was still a Cat.1 when it was way up in the Mississippi Delta! North Mississippi. People there were and are still without homes. Some electricity wasn't restored in Carrollton, MS for over a week! The whole state of MS was a State of Emergency.

My heart goes out to all the southern states that were affected by Katrina but I just hope everyone realizes that it wasn't just NO. As far as minorities...Mississippi is FULL of minorities!!!

New Orleans was a tragedy. I think it partly gets more coverage because it seems that according to the media, there were a LOT more corpses there in addition to the natural and structural damage found in MS and AL. But yes with all the "news" sources out there you'd expect something "new" and coverage of many areas and topics but alot of these media are owned by huge parent conglomerates, and they send their crews to the same areas because they're afraid they'll miss the big story, lose ratings, and lose their jobs. Herding principle. It's a silly vicious circle of self-fulfilling predictions of the hot topics. As soon as there was talk of the gov't help not being there as fast as hoped/demanded and someone implied that the president is a bigot it became a political storm as well, complete with racial, class, and party warfare so there you go...

"Things I had learned from watching TV": In restrospect, Katrina really only hit LA>> There are no white people, esp. rich, in NO affected by Katrina>> Bush must be a bigot b/c NO didn't get fixed quick enough; there are no other possible explanations>> Bush is obviously also responsible for 9-11, high gas prices, etc etc because he was in power when it all hit the fan and Americans look to our President as GOD to prevent or fix everything damaging; no one else is responsible. (And no, I'm not Republican)

Sorry about the loss of your stomping grounds, I live in Florida and survived 4 hurricanes in 44 days in '04.

You're right. Mississippi also got screwed over by hurricane Katrina. But, I guess everyone looks to the worst of what happened, and just point to New Orleans. Even though, if the Americans had listened way back when, when the French told them not to build a city down there, then there wouldn't be as many problems as there are right now. But I guess things happen for a reason. And stupidity will hurt in the long-run.

As a Floridian who lived through it, I definitely remember other things besides New Orleans. Remember, it hit Miami as a category 1 storm, which isn't devestating, but it did kill a few Floridians and destroy some property down here, too.

Similarly, why is Katrina the only hurricane that the media makes such a big deal out of? Here in Florida, we've been hit by 7 hurricanes in the last 2 years, plus tropical storms. When was the last time you went 5 days or more without electricity? I've personally done it 3 times in the last 2 years because of Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma, and I consider myself lucky that my family and I haven't sustained any major losses from any of those storms.

Writing from the outer edge of Tropical Storm Ernesto,

How very right you are. I'm in Long Beach, MS...and I know exactly what you're talking about...Katrina hit THE ENTIRE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, whereas we must complain about New Orleans all the time. Everyone always compares us to New Orleans...looters, gangs, theives, complaining, etc....we are not New Orleans. We're Mississippi...and we can rebuild...thanks to the good people who came to our aid....while we keep rebuilding, New Orleans can't stop fighting!

Hugs for you! If you ask someone who does not know anyone down here personally and an insurance agent about Katrina, you will get two things: it was a windless hurricane that, despite being miles in length, hit only one city.

Thank God for Robin Roberts. She's gotten Pass Christian out of the hole and into the limelight a bit, anyway.

You have a point... I also just think of New Orleans when I think about Hurricane Katrina, mostly beacause I didnt hear mostly about Mississippi. I feel your pain, and its always good to write out your anger.

I think the fault lies with the media. The only place they seem to concentrate their news coverage on is New Orleans. As well, the talk shows like Oprah, Dr. Phil and Ellen are all dedicating their shows to New Orleans this week.

Well I agree to a point with you,but it all leads to the government leaders and to me MS did as they should have spent the money there.
I donated money to New Orleans and I have yet to see where it has gone other than to city buildings.
Sounds like NO needs an overhaul I watched Dr.Phil today and yesterday and he got some progress done.

In New Orleans more minorities were affected. In the other places it was mostly poor whites. THe liberal media found the story of minorities being affect as more sexy since they could push the racism angle. Poor whites getting their trailers flooded didnt get their attention. Its not righjt but thats how it is.
