It is always a good idea to go to the doctor.
Here are some common things that can cause bad headaches that you might be able to fix yourself though:
Caffeine - caffeine is addictive, and if you drink a lot of cola, coffee or tea, you may get headaches when the effects start to wear off. You can fix this by slowly weaning yourself off of caffeine.
Niccotine - same as caffeine (addictive and coming down from the drug)
Dehydration - you can get headaches from not having enough water. Try having a glass of water at the first sign of a headache.
Hunger - if your blood sugar gets too low, you may get headaches too. Try to eat regularly and healthily so that your blood sugar is stable.
If none of these would apply to you, then definitely see a doctor.

They could be migraines, but they may be due to a neck problem. Are you laying down on the couch with your head against the arm? Have you had a car accident?
See your doctor if they don't get better.

Excedrin Migraine or Excedrin Tension usually works on mine. Take one or the other then get a heating pad and put it on the lowest setting and put it on your face for a few minutes. You will eventually fall asleep but when you get up you will feel soooo much better.

Try Excedrin Tension headache. If that doesnt work, you my have pulled a muscle in your neck, and need to get it put back into place.

Your upper back is out of place, just below your shoulder vertebrae. See a good chiropractor.
