i don't know about time. but to every person that was coming over here to escape what ever they were escaping it was a turning point to them since it was the first thing they saw of America.and they knew they were free to live the American dream. but she is the most American icon in the world u ask any body about America and the first thing they bring up is the statue of liberty

but her plaque says it all

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

the statue of liberty was a gift to america from france as a symbol of friendship or alliance they forged during american revolution..now it represents freedom and democracy along with international friendship.. i know some people don't know this but the statue of liberty was closed as a result of 9/11 and permanently opened back in '04

it was the pillar of hopes and dreams for immigrants that came to america through Ellis(bedloe island)

It's not, it is a symbol of freedom in America and new hope for those who get a second chance. The building and raising od the statue itself does not qualify as a "turning point in time". Perhaps the rise of America may...

Its the 1st time France ever gave anything to anyone. But we still had to put it together and that cost a fortune!
