An effective website has good information and makes someone want to come back time and time again.

A productive website is a website that is very successful at getting visitors and also keeps people coming back for more.

There are many productive and effective sites that are very plain.

I web design class of course they give you the standard answers to this such as content, pleaseing to the eyes, simple to navigate. Yet covering these three areas is allot of ground that gets left out.

In pleaseing to the eye, the question is who's eyes? What you may like is not always pleasing to others, Text that can not be seen due to clashing colors, White Text on pale background or dark on dark, make it hard on the veiwer. Also in this area, color choices must be considered: Purples and Pinks are thought of as kids colors or more femenine, these-for not good choice for a company site.

Another of these is content, you may have good content, yet it might be to much for the reader to take in, or not enough. I like to give enough to cover the topic and link to more information, or provide a way to contact me for more information. Yet the problem I see most is when someone is passionate about a topic they will talk about it.(In this case write about it) Often too much. Be short, consice, and to the point.

On navigation too little and you will frustrate the viewer because they cannot get where they want. Also too much can cause the same effect due to the viewer not knowing where to go or where they have been, label the pages if posssible.

If you just follow these simple guidelines and remember never to create in excess. Then your site should do fine, and will be both informative and pleasing to the eye. (effective design)

Good Luck.

to me the most important thing to creating a decent website is functionality. If I can't navigate the website I move on to another. Although graphics are nice you have to find a balance between a beautiful website and load times and what is the purpose of the website. I would definately avoud flash intro's, background sound, and such. Although they may look/sound great they take longer to load and just about everyone uses the "skip intro" button and of course people who come back to the site again and again are going to find it annoying. So functionality and ease of navigation should be your first priority. Second is Graphics and "curb appeal"

The people I know who have financially productive websites have created the site because they were enthusiastic about the subject of the website. Fantastic design isn't always necessary, but fantastic content is. As an example, the design of http://www.cruisenews.net is not great, but it does produce because it has tremendous content.

Clean and simple. If you want to add graphics and animations, go ahead, but make sure that it still is easily navigatable, is clear and contains all neccesary information.

And do NOT try and make a flash-only webpage. Those or unspeakably ridiculous.
