i work in a shop, and i actually just priced out that job for a 1999 windstar with the 3.8L, and i think i priced out the job at my shop for about $2500 canadian, but thats also with some combined labor, parts, and a little bit of room for unknown parts what should be done at that time is the valve covers, thermostat, coolant flush, spark plugs (cap, rotor button, and wires if nessicary), gaskets, and a few more parts, and then labor, its a big job, and probably not something that you can do in your driveway in an afternoon, and there are some speciality tools that are needed too

Put some dye in the oil to actually determine where the oil is leaking from. I had a slow oil leak from the front and rear of the intake manifold that was more of a nusance than anything. The hot oil on various hot surfaces under the car was annoying to say the least. I paid $1,100 for a job that included among other things an intake manifold gasket kit ($278.31), an upper air plenum because the old one was cracked or became cracked during the repair ($268.39) and $422.00 of labor. This was a job that I could have easily accomplished after viewing the various videos that are available on YouTube. I now have an intermittent engine miss at idle while the engine is in drive which is probably a result of not properly cleaning out the EGR ports while the intake manifold was off the engine. This is an engine design that is specific to the 3.8 liter V6. Well I guess its back to the service station to complain about a job that I should have done myself.

You will eventually need to pull the head to do a complete repair on the head gasket (most likely the issue). You may want to try some Radiator "Stop-Leak" that you can pick up at the local auto parts store. At the very least, continue to watch the coolant and and oil. Most likely the leak is only on the outside of the head and not into the engine and therfore the oil....

Good Luck!
