There is an entire book about this issue entitled:
Homosexual Behaviour in Animals: An Evolutionary Perspective.

In a nutshell - it is not unheard of for some species of animals to engage in sexual activity purely for pleasure which can involve the same sex of their species and self-stimulation.

I don't know if that makes them gay, or just opportunistic.

I doubt it. They don't know what "gay" means. It is not unusual for an animal of the same sex try. It's the animal in them.

i had 3 russian dwarf hamesters two males and a female and i would always give them the seeds out of my bag and after they ate them they would run around and mount each other for about an hour or so then they would curl up in there house and sleep,so maybe not gay but a drug induced orgy,

my friend had 2 female dogs that would lick each other when on heat but never tried to have sex in any other ways I guess that would not mean they were gay as such but did seem to enjoy doing this to each other.

No. When animals hump each other and it does not pertain to mating, it is a dominance issue.
