Let me first say that I have never used this method with carpeting. But, to get gum out of hair I use peanut butter. The oil content of the peanut butter lets the gum slip off once the PB is worked into the hair. This might work, depending on the type of carpeting involved.

Ice will work or you can buy a can of gum remover which does this much quicker, you spray it on the gum, it freezes the gum and you scrape it into small pieces, then vacuum it up. It's a good product to keep around the house, it works on wax as well. Any store that carries janitorial supplies will have this.

Answers above work well - DO NOT use goo gone, because it will affect the glue on the carpet backing, that holds the fibers together. I found this out the hard way.

You can rub an ice cube over the gum to freeze it, then shatter the gum and vacuum it up.

Use an ice cube and it should get hard . then you can just pick it off.
if it is already hard lighter fluid sometimes works. but don't smoke while cleaning it up.
good luck..
