I never read the scarlet letter but I can think of 2 women that have been publicly shunned within the past 10 years.
Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who had a sexual relationship with her 12-year old student, had his child, and then after getting out of prison, married him and has another child with him.

Or the woman who drowned her 5 children, Andrea Yates.

What about a sex offender who's finished out a sentence, who's returned to the community, and who's just been "outed"? (You might have to do some fancy Googling to see if you can find some news reports of someone who's been clobbered in post-release, and community reaction.)
Could you draw some sort of parallel there, between the "OMG, look at that outrageous Hester and her bastard, in her lovely community, bringing down our moral standards! Something out to be done...." and "look at that horrible pervert, out among decent people...." Both have already been punished by society already, and have now to live within it....

Well, we know that Hester was shunned for doing something sexual right? Sex out of marriage? Try President Clinton...

I saw this on E! on television today. Tara Reid was totally snubbed this weekend. She wasn't allowed into a club for some reason or another and Paris Hilton was inside. I believe there is video footage on TMZ.com . Good luck!
