You could grow your own fruits and vegetables. We planted 12 strawberry plants a few years ago and now harvest several bowls of delicious strawberries every year... all we have to do is pick 'em. Lots of other berries and fruits are the same way. Where I live, tomato plants start producing fruit in July and don't stop until mid-October.
You can also get a bread maker and make the most delicious bread you've ever had. A slice of bread, some fruits, nuts and vegetables is a very good meal.
Just be sure you get out now and then for a slice of pizza or a burger.

Because the processes that the food has to go through takes longer to produce. Plus, foods without preservatives in them go bad faster so stuff like Oreos and Cookies and stuff that have a long shelf life can be cheaper.
Too, fruits and veggies are shipped by truck so ... gas costs PLUS the fact that the fruit will go bad in just a little bit of time, meaning that a LARGE amount of the fruit and veggies that the store purchased will be thrown, even if the cost is lowered.
Unfortunately, all people won't buy up all the fruit, even if it's cheap, although I would also.

its like every thing I have the same question all the time. I can only afford to buy fruit when its on a good special I mean come on $4 a kilo of apples there are more apples then one can poke a stick at these days I have to feed 6 people that is about one apple each depending on the size of the apple. I know why bananas are so expensive I believe some places are paying $12 or more a kg for these at the moment but even when the price does come back down you can expect them not to come back down to the price they were before I have seen this many times with other fruits and veggies if they go up due to flood or drought or something like that they may drop when supply is better but never come back down as low as they were before. I also notice if it says low fat it will also be more expensive then the one that is full of fat. I know there is more involved in removing the fat but come on this is extreme. the governments should have more to say about this. they say that there are so many over weight people around but to eat right to lose the weight is more expensive to buy.

Actually, only certain foods cost more money. Salads aren't that expensive, are they? They're excellent for your health. So are a lot of common fruits. Look them up, see what vitamins they contain, what improvements they are good for. Branded health products and organic foods do cost more as they require extra effort for companies to produce them. But regular veggies and fruits are not that expensive.

Produce stores are cheaper: Buy in season. The trick is to not let anything go to waste after you bring it home. Sometimes it is so cheap and we buy a lot and forget about it and then we have to put it in the composter.
Health food stores: I love to go there especially for the items sold in bulk and the specialty breads.

thats something that the advertizing people came up with, make the junk food cheaper, means that you'd buy more junk food than the stuff that you need. its all about business. True its wrong to do, but thats just how the world works. sucks, i know.
