Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. It is the precursor to his more famous controverial book.

The lead-ins are similar. An important physicist killed in a bizzar manner, and the protagonist has to decipher a cryptic symbol burned into the murdered man's chest.

It was a spine tingling thriller that leads you on a fast-paced chase to catch the perpetrator(s). I liked this one because he used elements that were similar to his other books. In a weird sort of way you can see how the man's mind works in creating a plot line and the unusual twists in the plot. I enjoyed this book a lot.

I've also read Digital Fortress, and Deception Point by Dan Brown.
