It is one continent, The American Continent, they don't have the same name, it is sub-divided, North America, Central and South America, (north, central and south) This is quite basic, from elementary school, read a bit more, or read articles in Google
There is only one american continent though, Christopher Colombus discovered it, and there are 5 continents in the world.

South does not equal north--not the same name. North America is a continent. South America is a continent. America commonly refers to the United States of America. (short version)

People from the U.S. call the country 'America' because it is the United States of America. I know that's not the answer you want but that's the only reason. Technically, people from Canada, Mexico, and South America are Americans as well but no one refers to them that way. It is very common for United States citizens to refer to themselves as Americans because it is in the name of the country.

Good question, but lots of things in life are arbitrary decisions. In the early days of exploration the whole western hemisphere was referred to as the Americas. Probably just became easier to separate them into North, Central and South.

Wow, I would consider you pretty ignorant for not knowing that already. The US has been big headed, that's why they think they are a country knows as 'America'.
