The United States is a country in North America, which is a continent. There is North America and South America, both contients. Technically out country is called United States, or The United States of America. The fact that we call our selves Americans doesn't make that much sense being that technically anyone who lives on the continent of North America or South America could say they were "americans". Not sure who started calling people from the United States, Americans.
