If the baby latches correctly, then no it isn't painful.

It doesn't have to be. It depends on how good the baby's latch is. I never really experienced much pain when I breast-fed, but supposedly (from what nurses and doctors said), my son had a particularly good latch-on. I only had to use lansinoh twice (a medicated ointment specifically designed for sore nipples). Talk to a lactation specialist in your area (see lalecheleague.org to get more info on who is available nearby) about how to do it with as little pain as possible. Usually, a hospital will have a lactation specialist if it's large enough. More than being painful, I would say breastfeeding is exauhsting. I was SO tired after 3 months that I started supplementing with formula. Do what you feel is best for you and your baby. Good luck and God bless!

The first few days you will have some tenderness while you and baby both get used to it - you many also have some dry/cracking skin around the nipple area, but if you rub either Lanolin or even breast milk over them, they are better almost right away.

After the few days you will be fine - I breastfed my little girl for 7 months and even though it took a little practice at first - it was totally worth it. She has been incredibly healthy - she is now 1 year old and she has never even had a cold! Not one sick day in a year!

It can be very painful. My daughter was born 6 weeks early and she couldn't figure out how to latch on...long story short, I ended up using a nipple shield. The shield helped a lot. Then I had a son and we went through a couple of weeks of pure heck. He would latch on and I would be in tears. But after a while everything got better and both of my kids are better for my perseverance.

Not unless a milk duct gets clogged. I had that happen once, and the only thing you can do to unclog it is to keep breastfeeding, and eventually the duct will open again, until then, it is painful, but that seldom happens. Also, if your still feeding when they are cutting teeth, it can be pain full! My son seemed to know it hurt, and he would look as though he thought it was funny! Other than that its not a problem, and actually you feel relief when the milk releases and comes out.

There were some times when it was a little uncomfortable but to make sure their is no real pain, make sure the baby is latched on correctly. I breastfed my son until he was 18 mos. I think it's great that you are thinking about breastfeeding. There is nothing better for a baby. It's really their first immunization. Breast is Best :)

Well my wife breast feed both our children and yes it is very painful in the begining, but you have to think that breast feeding is more benefical for your child than just baby formula. Don't get me wrong baby formula is great, but the bigest diffrence is that is has some things that are really needed for your child. One of them If I am right is that it contains some of the antibiotics from the mothers body, which is given to the baby. So I strongly advice to breastfeed just for 6 months thats all you need, but more one year is even better. Talk to your Pedectrican about it. take care

You mean breastfeed? I am about to find out, since I'll be giving birth in a few months. But yeah, I've heard a lot of women say that it is painful, but fulfilling at the same time, since a little bundle of joy is receiving milk from you through the process. :)

At first your nipples get kinda sore, but you use lanolin on them and that helps. It's definately an advantage for not only the baby but for you too. For a while right after giving birth, you can actually feel it tighten up your uterus which bottle feeding doesn't do!

Yes at first, but you get used to it once your nipples toughen up. As long as the baby is latched on corectly. If he/she is just on the tip then it hurts some.

It isnt always comfortable, but its not necessarily painful. Sometimes your breasts will get very full and start to ache. Sometimes the child will favor one side over the other - and that one side can get a little sore.
