Pin numbers? Look for one corner different than the others, that will be near pin 1. It may be a simple dimple in the plastic, but will be nowhere else.

Pins are then (usually) numbered counterclockwise in sequence as viewed from the top of the chip. To be sure, look up your microchip manual on the Internet.

Chips - especially general-purpose chips - are usually publicly documented and the information is usually made widely available. The makers get more sales if the hardware people can quickly see the specs.
