why in the hell do real estate sales people and realtors have to plaster their face all over their ads and their business cards? even larger than life billboards.

I suspect its because they work on a commission of the sales so they're a little paranoid that someone else will step in and close the sale. The idea is that once you know who you've been doing business with, you will take the time to look them up instead of letting someone else from the same agency handle your business.
It may also have to do with the idea that people tend to buy from attractive people more than from unattractive ones. That would account for the stepford smiles you see common among sales people in general.
Edit: The sales people may not actually be attractive but then again aren't sales people supposed to be self confident? A picture shows confidence in their own looks.

I'm sure they no doubt have a significant ego and truly believe they're a sight for sore eyes....hence a lure to prospective clients. But a photo doesn't tell me anything about their ethics or ability.
