It sound like the partition structure or boot record for your hard drive is corrupted or damaged. Because of that you may need special software (or professional help) to recover the info from your HD.
I have never used any recovery software so I can't reccomend anything but here's a link to one I ran into... http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/NTFS-Data-Recovery.html
The only time that I had a crashed drive to deal with I used Knoppix, the bootable linux CD to read the HD and recovered the files that way. You can download the iso for Knoppix at http://knoppix.com/

The new hard drive does need to be formatted, just like it's telling you.
All you have to do is select a file system, such as FAT32 or NTFS, then do a quick format. Afterwards, it will show up with its own drive letter in Windows Explorer.

New drive comes unpartitioned and unformatted. You need to partition it (even if it is going to be just one partition), then format it.
I suggest REMOVING the drive with data on it, so there is no way you can accidentally format the wrong one. If you do, it will result in more less permanent loss of your data.
Once it is formatted, connect all 3 and transfer the data.

in case you haven't replaced any jumpers or hardware configurations at present, odds are your troublesome stress has failed. this can nicely be a mechanical inner failure or a circuit board failure. once you've extra added drives to the samed IDE controller at present, then you definitely ought to regulate the stress jumpers to both draw close, slave or cable pick looking on your config. This difficulty with the stress not being regarded at times is led to by using problems with the circuit board on the stress, if that's the case and also you ought to discover yet another similar stress, replace the board and word no matter if that's regarded. It must be a board from an similar stress (or very, very close revision smart) and also you want a fashionable man or woman screwdriver to get rid of the screws. Getting the stress to be regarded in the bios is the first step, if bios see's it, yet domicile windows does not, I advise using "the most suitable Boot CD" you'll discover it by using googling. that's a mix Linux/domicile windows boot disk. that's a stunning boot disk with all kinds of utilities for report fix and such. good success.

This is normal. Hard disks are not pre-formatted. Formatting is a operatiing system function. After formatting, you will be able to use the 3rd hard disk as any other in your system.
