It's difficult to find good sci-fi, but there are decent ones out there. Christopher Pike is a decent writer, I'm reading "The Tachyon Web" so far so good. "The Barcode Tattoo" very decent, very believable. "1984" is a standard and an awesome book by Orwell, I'd also recommend "Animal Farm." Nancy Farmer's "The House of the Scorpion" is awesome, though some people don't like the ending. Ray Bradbury's "Farehiet 451" and Huxley's "Brave New World" are also standards in science fiction. There are more hard-core sci-fi books like Isaac Asimov, it's decent stuff, but it goes on and on and characters talk in laundry list format sometimes. It's annoying but it's very scientific.
And if you want more science fiction that's decent, check out the winners of the Nebula and the Hugo awards. They're huge for sci-fi writers.

A decent Author I know of isn't truly a Sci Fi author. He writes a fantastic Vampire Series as well as a ton of other books that could fit in the sci fi category. His name is Brian Lumley. His books are long but fantastic!!

George RR Martin-A Song of Ice and Fire (All over 700 pages, there are four books out know, plus two novellas, and there will be seven in the series, with the fifth out hopefully by next spring)
R. Scott Bakker--Prince of Nothing (A completed trilogy that is part of a larger series called the Second Apocalypse)
Stephen Erikson--Malazan Book of the Fallen (I admittedly haven't read this one yet, but it's a long series, and I've heard nothing but excellent things about it from some very well-read fantasy fans. Same people who recommended Bakker to me, and I adore his books)

There are a lot of good ones out there. The best one I've found was King Fortis the Brave by LaMontagne and Snyder. It's about a pair of twins that are pulled into a magical land where they find themselves caught in the middle of a battle for control of the realm. The boy twin, Rodney, is mistaken for King Fortis, a King Arthur-like figure that is to someday return in the time of the land's greatest need. It's really a great book full of humor and adventure. I recommend it to my students all the time and have had students that really hate to read come back and tell me how much they love it.

Without doubt, the best arthur in science fiction is Isaac Asimov, yse he's been dead 14 years but his works are timeless and many define what science fiction is. I would especially recomend the Foundation series. The galctic empire books and the robot stories are also very good. Anne McCaffey's Dragon Riders sries is also excellent As is Frank Herbert's Dune series. L. Ron Hubbards Battlefield Eath is also excellent science fiction. For fantasy, go with Tolkien and Terry Brooks.

Hi .. I have been reading the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind... there are 9 at the moment (I think) and the final will come out in around 18 months. Love the way he writes. Excellent fantasy series.. hate waiting so long for the last one but that is part of the desire for the book.

Neil Gaiman is phenominal. I'd start with American Gods, a really thoughtful, fanciful and funny story about the gods of myth in modern day America.
Stephen King has several fantasy books including The Eyes of the Dragon. And if you like long, you'll love the Gunslinger books-- it's a 7 book epic.

Michelle West's Sun Sword series. There's six books in the series and they are each around 800 pages. She working on the seventh now. The character development in her books is amazing. And it's hard to find good fantasy out there that's not a complete rip off of the Lord of the Rings. Her books are very original. I recomend them to everyone I talk to.
