During a seemingly routine blood donation, the blood flow was very slow and stopped after about 30 minutes. The nurse tried moving the needle around, squeezing the arm, and moving the donor, but nothing more would come out. When the needle was taken out, the blood was spurting out of the arm just fine. The donation was stopped after only 1/2 the usual amount was retrieved.
Why wouldn't the blood go into the needle during the donation? I can think of several reasons, but I don't know if my reasons are medically sound.
Thanks for any informed opinions.
