I think it should develop a good base for all the skills, experiences and curveballs that everyone has to deal with as they go through their late teens, twenties and beyond. As far as the actual education, high school should teach kids how to think independently, formulate thoughtful arguments and come up with solutions to problems. You WILL forget 95% of what you are taught in class. I think high school also provides strong social skills needed for being successful. Learning how to ask teachers questions, scam a few more marks on a test and get extensions will be more valuable than knowing the root of Pi. Mingling successfully between the jocks, stoners and brains is also very important, as you never know who could be interviewing you for a job in 10 years.
The classes are all filler.

In my opinion, about 50 % of high school students shouldn't even be enrolled. At age 14, those that aren't going to be college bound should be culled out and sent to trade schools are apprenticed out to learn a skill or trade in the blue collar or brown collar sector. It takes so many blues and browns to support the educated class. Without them our system will become top heavy and our economic structure will collapse and it will be the end of the world as we know it and chaos will reign for 1, 783 years.
Uhh, What was the question?

High schools need to begin teaching "real world" skills. Our young people have NO idea of what it takes to survive. Thanks to all of the advancements in technology, they are lazy and think everything should be afforded to them. I have so many of my students that talk to me every day...hungry for real world knowledge and at the same time I have those who say the craziest things due to ignorance.

We just discussed this this weekend. Believe it or not, we think they should walk away with the basic knowledge of everything from money to computers to manners. Colleges want to see well rounded individuals.
