I got mine really young I was 11. My mother really acted crazy it was so embarrassing! She went around and asked all of the neighbors who had young girls in their family if they had any junion sized kotex. That was back when you had to wear this pad with two gauze ends that you affixed to a "kotex belt" and it helped to hold the pad in place. I was so embarrassed she went and blabbed about it to everyone, when I got on the school bus the next morning everyone looked at me and laughed and whispered. I just thought it was the worst thing that would ever happen to me...Now I am telling who knows how many strangers about it! So you see what seems like the end of the world when you are very young, you learn to get over...no wait, I can feel my face growing hot and red. It still is embarrassing! How awful! I hope that the adults in your life were cool about it anyway. Sex and "the big sex talk" is a difficult thing to get through if your mother is like mine was. I just wanted to crawl in the closet or under the bed and hide! I felt so ashamed.

It's all natural and all that, but I know it can be something that you wish you never had to talk about with your mother...(that may change after you get older. My mother told me I should feel lucky because her mother never told her anything...I don't think I would have minded if she had just talked to ME, but when she went around and told all of the people in the neighborhood it was horrible!

I was 10 years old and in the 5th grade. Every class room had it's own bathroom, and I was the only girl in my class that got periods. It didn't take long for the other girls to figure out whose wrapped up pads were in the bathroom, and I soon got the nickname Big Red.
