I know him from the Dandy comics. I knew there were cartoons of him, but haven't seen them myself.
Bananaman (1983-1986)
producers: 101 Productions
animation: cel animation
episodes: 40 x 5min
"This is 29 Accacia Road, and this is Eric the
schoolboy who leads an amazing double life..."
- Bananaman Intro
DC Thomson's banana-munching schoolboy-turned-hero comes to the small
screen in a fondly remembered series. Comedians Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie
and Tim Brooke Taylor, known collectively as "The Goodies" of course, furnished
the show with some splendidly silly voices, just right for this animated comic strip.
Bananaman's not-so-super-villains included Appleman, General Blight, Dr Gloom,
The Nerks, The Heavy Mob, Weatherman, and who can forget that knitting
needle wielding wonder Auntie?
Interesting to see the changes that occurred
during the translation from the "Nutty" comic strip
to screen. Bananaman now has yellow gloves
instead of his red originals, and schoolboy Eric
Wimp now has hair and a name-change to
Eric Twinge, but the essence of the strip
remains unchanged...
Interesting too, to see how the series proceeded
to influence the strip. DC Thomson published
several Bananaman Annuals whilst the show
was on air and these featured art based on
the new-look tv appearances, rather than
the Nutty originals...
Bananaman was a hit not only in the UK, but also in America where it was
aired as an interstitial toon on Nickelodeon. Indeed, as the links below
testify it is still fondly recalled by the 80s generation...
Surprising to find that Bananaman was actually the first DC Thomson star
to make it to our screens. Animated "Beano" strips and the Dennis & Gnasher
series followed in the 1990's and there was also Thomson's non-comic
creation The Blobs. Talk surfaced a while back about an adaptation of
The Numskulls (see: The Hound), but nothing has yet surfaced...
The Bananaman series was produced by Terry Ward and his old production
partner Trevor Bond. Terry is a prolific animation producer with credits
ranging from the original The Mr Men series to the recent CGI production of
"Busy Buses". He was also the producer of those animated "Beano" strips
mentioned above and due to be indexed at Toonhound in time...

The Encyclopedia of Super Heroes (Jeff Rovin, 1986) lists Bananaman as a British super hero.
"A British super hero who first appeared in Nutty Comics in 1980 and has since become an animated TV character. Decked out in a bodysuit complete with priceless banana peel gloves, the mighty Bananaman is nerdy student Eric Wimp in this superhero send up."
Makes me wish I had seen it.
