Well, they didn't so much have to be advertised. There wasn't much else to do, so everyone fairly well knew when the next play was up. There were cryers out in front of the theatres to attract passersby, posters, and "orange" girls.

Practically no one could read. Some of the people taught were the wealthy, so it was generally for them, so no posters, or the theatre would have been empty, if there was no other way, becaue the commoners who really filled it wouldn't know. They had criers, to announce whatever play was on, and people actually listened to them. They used flags in front and through the theater as well, to tell you what play you were seeing. Black was tragedy, and I can't remember the others, but you get the drift. This way, there was no guessing who could read and who couldn't, and everyone knew what was going on.

They flew a flag the day of the play! Remember hardly ANYONE could read (so no posters) and everything depended on the weather in the open-air theaters. Look up the Globe Theater. You'll find tons of great websites and lots of pictures.
P.S. Different colors meant different genres: humor, drama, etc.

Often times, the theater owner would send essentially sales people into the streets to orally announce the play. Like they did with news papers and how they'd say "Extra Extra Read ALL About IT!", the news of the play would be spread similarly through word of mouth the morning of the play.

I believe it would be via word of mouth and a display in front of the theater. Such as, a painting.

there would be fliers posted on the sides of buildings and trees, kinda like clubs do today, and the theaters would hire criers to announce the plays and who was in them.
