Some older titles you should look for:

"Nexus" by Mike Baron and Steve Rude - incredibly good.

"Zot!" by Scott McCloud. One of the best.

"Mage: The Hero Discovered" by Matt Wagner. One look and you'll want to read it.

"Jon Sable, Freelance" by Mike Grell. Believe it or not, this book evolved into one terrific love story. And it still had guns and kicked butt!

"American Flagg!" by Howard Chaykin. For grown-ups only. Howie at his best.

"Miracleman" by Alan Moore. Before Neil Gaiman took it into a completely different direction, Alan Moore crafted a great modern-day superhero story.

"Cerebus" by Dave Sim. Start with the "High Society" storyline and take it from there. You can thank me later.

GRIMJACK!
Balls to the wall action, sci fi, fantasy book that set the standard in the 80's.

Both the writer (John Ostrander) and artist (Time Truman) are American born and bred too. not British, Scottish and Irish like all the guys that everyone keeps telling you about in the other answers.

1. Any incarnation of the Legion, excepting the current version.

2. The Sandman (Gaiman's, not the dude with the gas mask)

3. Ultimate Spiderman, which I guess is my favorite by default, since it's the only one with new stories being published

Depends on the time period.

But my favs are (in no particular order):

X-Men - back when Claremont wrote it, and it was still good
The Legion of Super-Heroes - 80's - 90's version, when it was still good
G.I. Joe - 80's - 90's version, when it was still good
Strikeforce: Morituri
The Watchmen
V for Vendetta
Kabuki
The WildC.A.T.s
Cyber Force
Darkness
Rising Stars

... a few others that I am forgetting.

Currently loving the X-Treme X-Men series, trying to get my hands on them all! It's a shame the art can be shockingly bad sometimes in the later issues. Especially for a well written series that started with such amazing artwork.

Batman, ( but is it an American comic if Grant Morrison is writing?)
