Remote Desktop, more control over file security, and the ability to be in a network domain (which doesn't matter to a home user) are the most important differences.

Server connectivity, which many small offices do not have. Every function and feature of Windows XP pro is really available in XP Home. People just like paying more.

Same idea as Windows NT Workstation vs. Windows NT Server; there are some parts in the higher level build (the Professional version) that is enabled there but purposely turned off and auxiliary programs not included in Home. Corporate network stuff.

The key difference is that Professional is made for domains and home is not.
You can not login or connect to a domain with XP Home this is why professional is used in all offices.
