It varies state to state. in some places there is a very long waiting list. The earlier that you can get on it the better. In my county you have to be on the waiting list for a voucher for three years. So hustle down to your counties housing authority immediately with your tax return ( 2005) and any proof of income and state assistance that you receive. Good Luck

I was on HUD when I was single and had 2 kids. It wasn't worth the time and bull* I made min. wage and got 300 in child support and all they would pay was 40 dollars. Then one of my kids went to live with their dad and I lost the 300 dollars a month. I lived in a piece of sh*t house that the land lord jacked up the price because HUD was paying. I thought if I ever had to do it again, I'd just skip it. Unless you didn't work and they paid most if not all of it, then it would be worth it. But someone trying to make it and not "live off" the government...it's not worth it. Oh, and you have to get on a list, and you have to find the house, and man talk about a hassle. (Oklahoma)

First off, sorry to here about your trouble. I work for the Little Rock Housing Authority in Arkansas, but not on the administration side. I do know that eligibility is generally based on income, and here they base your rent on thirty percent of your gross. As a single mother with children, here you would not qualify for an efficiency high-hise apartment, but would qualify for a single-family dwelling (a house) in one of our project neighborhoods. Usually you could be moved in and set up within thirty days, depending on your particular location, availability, and how long a waiting list your dealing with. Contact your local Housing Authority as quickly as you can. (like in the morning) They will get you started on what information youre going to need to provide them. Good Luck, and hold your head up. You are not the only one in this boat.

you need to call the proper agency in your area and they can advise you how to get placed on the waiting list. I have never been on housing assistance but I know that there is a huge waiting list and red tape up the wahoo. GL

HUD (Housing & Urban Development) will assist with rent. I don't know what the application process is but I know of people who received assistance quite fast.

Such housing is usually called Section 8 Housing. Try here...
http://www.sha-web.org/findhousing/section8/
Or type Section 8 Housing into your search engine, with the name of your State.
