I practically lived at Haulover Beach and kept an apartment in Fort Lauderdale (I moved from Fort Lauderdale in 2001). I loved it! Over 90% male in the traditionally gay section (the far left as your looking at the ocean), but the remainder of the beach had a fairly equal gender distribution.
Is it worth going? That depends on what your expectations are. If you stick to the general population side of the beach you should not expect anything unseemly - in fact, it appeared to be quite family friendly.
Haulover Beach is actually in Hallandale/North Miami, so the crime statistics are a little different. This area is a well-established tourist/retirement community. Stick to daylight hours - the beach is usually well populated. I've never known of any serious problems there.
I'm sorry I can't provide any information on the hotels. I had an apartment in Fort Lauderdale, remember?

You may see women. Generally straight woman are likely to be accompanied.

a bunch of old overweight europeans and canadians is all you'll see on the strait beach, and sodomites on the northern section. if you are looking to pick some one up, miami beach is topless.
