•Monroe piercings are done on the upper lip.
Many people also call this the "Madonna piercing" the "mole piercing"
•Medusa piercings are done on the upper lip too, just right in the middle.
Both piercings are pierced with a labret stud, Usually 14 gauge. (a labret post is a flat backed piece of jewelry with a bead.)
These piercings are known to swell during their healing process, so for the first few months, the piercee is stuck with a longer bar on their labret stud. This can be changed after for a smaller more comfortable labret stud.
Improper placement of this piercing can cause gum erosion, so its always best for the piercee to get it done professionally.
As for why? Its a personal decision. Its just like any other piercing.

If you consult a professional piercer they can help you out. And before you get a piercing done, they would definitely ask you if you agree on the placement which they show by usually putting a small dot where it would be pierced; which can be easily changed if you don't like it. It depends on your personal preference, and how you look. You could always try and get an impression of how different placements would like by using fake usually, or even just holding up a stud. Just be sure that you're confident about your decision so that you won't regret anything.

It's on the top lip, usually on girls. It's like the same spot as Marilyn Monroe's mole on her lip.
I don't know why girls do it, but it's just kind of a feminine facial piercing.

its like on the left side of your face on your lip but up near your nose.. where marilyn monroe had a mole..

its on your upper lip. i think its on your right side. its a stud that looks like a beauty mark the other side is a madonna
