That's their job, to know where places are located. How else can you properly study the world unless you know where the places you are studying are and what effects they have on the areas adjacent to them?

So that we can learn about the world accurately. Guess you didn't like geography at school? Besides when you go on holiday how did you find out about those countries and where the are in the first place?

because they would be horridly embarassed if they got lost or didn't know how to get from here to there. Is this a serious question?
