I think Harry Potter really appeals to people because it uses classic characters and situations and still created a new genre. Harry is like many superheroes who have tragedy in their backgrounds, yet manage to turn their intensity to fighting for good causes (Batman, Spiderman). Witches and wizards have a choice to use their powers for good, or to give in to ego and greed (Galadriel, Saruman). But the stories are based in the almost-real world where kids deal with school situations, adults deal with work and personal situations, and even the good guys sometimes make mistakes. People who are rude about Harry Potter don't understand what a great and exciting world JKR has created. If she decides never to write about it again, I hope she allows other writers to pick up where she leaves off.

Um, obviously if you don't want to listen to why it's not good, you're not very open-minded.

Harry Potter is very entertaining and worth the read, but it is certainly not great literature, as many of it's fans seem to think. It is written on a fourth grade reading level (as are most bestsellers), and it's characters are stereotypes. Hundreds of writers could have come up with an idea similar. It's nothing spectacular, seriously. The fact that it translates so well into a movie shows just how simplistic the plot really is.

Oh, and while I'm already pissing people off, I also can't stand Eragon or Terry Goodkind.

because j.k. rowling did an amazing job giving the readers something to see in their heads as they're reading the books. she actually makes the readers feel like they know these characters. i'm 25 years old, 26 on sept.19th and i have read and re-read all the harry potter books. the first few atleast 3x each, the last few more like 8-9 times each.

I love Harry Potter because there is so much detail and adventure. The highs, the lows, the quirkiness of it. I just love everything about it, except when my favourite characters die.

i love harry potter..i think one of the things that i like the most, is that he has went thru so many hardships, that when good things happen to him he is amazed..and grateful. he is not spoiled, he is not sheltered, and yet he's remained a level-headed, funny, sarcastic, normal kid despite all the stuff he's been thru. i feel bad for him when he misses his parents; i feel happy for him when he wins a prize; i feel scared when he goes thru facing voldemort or bad kids like malfoy, etc. it's great.. lots of emotions and action that runs thru the story lines. i think #1, #3, and #6 were the best books so far.. :)

Because it has a great plot, it is written in a really great way (funny at some points, scary at others...always entertaining!), and of course because we just have to find out what happens with Ron and Hermione!

The author is a genius at creating great characters and thrilling plots. That's why it is interesting in any language.

Because it's such an imaginative story like Peter Pan.

He's not.

I hate that series, because it's overhyped, overrated and awful. And who are you to tell me to go away?
