Don't forget, every age is "modern" to the people living in it.

What's modern about this age -- it seems more barbaric than anytime in my life-time. Perhaps we just know more now and the same stuff has been happening all along but it appers that we have more convenient technological devices to keep us from real thought (i.e. math, science, philosophy/theology, silence, cultural studies etc.), our families, noble causes like helping the sick and impoverished, and a miriad of other life-affirming activities. I am not a democrat or a socialist, I just believe in personal responsibility to make the world better. I don't think my happiness is the pinnacle of existence.

How is life qualitatively better than before? There is a "fast is better" mentality which permeates everything. People aren't into sacrifice, discipline, doing good for the whole instead of the individual, I see modern life as convenience living and would trade silence, contemplation, focus on family, community, and country, the world peace rallies of the 60's and 70's over ipods, weapons of mass destruction, non-stop media with an agenda instead of objective reporting, terrorism every day in some part of the world and the idea that we are all individuals and everyone's opinion is just as important as anothers at the expense of real truth -- everyone thinks they are an expert and few people listen and take to heart what anyone has to say who disagrees with them.

And if modern life is so wonderful why is antiquing, retro clothing, interior design, and the phrase, "the good ole' days" so prevalent?

I don't hate modern life, I just find myself trying to live what I believe which is often against the flow and it gets frustrating, especially with children who cannot remember when integrity, loyalty, commitment, and hard work could get you somewhere in life.

I wonder if you aware how pertinent your question is? Modern life is not all that it is cracked up to be. There are so many detractors. I think the problem is the speed at which we are trying to accomplish everything! The modern application of money, politics and religion is going to kill us all!

I like it - it is extremely convenient and "working for the man" leaves me with plenty of time to worry about the problems it causes and wish I was somewhere else without ever having to actually get off the couch. Sadly, I can't tell if I'm being truthful or sarcastic.

i like some things about it, and hate the rest. ive always thought it would be cool to live on "little house on the prairie" and help pa cut down trees for the winter and help ma with the garden. nellie would have irritated me though...oh sorry, i didnt mean to wander. bottom line is i would rather be living in a different kind of world. good question :o)

I like it, generally. I've never really felt I'd like to live in the wilderness as some kind of tax-free recluse. Stil I do worry about how developement impacts our environment and sustainability.

Obviously, the benefits are beneficial: medicine etc.
The drawback is great ugliness.
