when you type in something to look for it stays there. I want to clear them off

You can delete the history of search bar on ur homepage (whatever it is either Yahoo! or Google) by following this path. Tools> internet options> content> auto complete> clear forms. To stop the generation of history uncheck the box of forms.

You can delete the search history on ur yahoo toolbar this way. click the arrow in the search box. Select options, click clear history. Follow this path also. Pencil> toolbar options> uncheck the boxes of enable auto complete and enable history> ok.

To delete address bar history, follow this path. Tools> internet options> general > clear history > set the number of days to zero> ok.

try a free program called ccleaner . It will clean the history and anything in the recycle bin as well as anything entered into a search engine

well you can try to delete your cookies and cache. for IE you can go into tools>internet options>then delete cookies files and history. that should do it. if that doesnt work i would suggest downloading a program such a ccleaner www.ccleaner.com which does this for you. if it doesnt work you may want to try getting that specific search engine's toolbar and it may have an option to delete the saved searches.
