In China, eating the soup is better for the health. It provides more enzymes to help you digest the hard part of the meal. As far as salt, it is not necessary to have a lot of salt in soup.

Clear soups and broths generally have few calories but produce a sense of fullness. If eaten before a meal, you would tend to eat less during the meal. Cream soups are calorie dense, so you wouldn't save as many calories.

Soup before dinner is the appetizer same as having a salad before dinner or bread. It's your choice.
It helps fill you up so that you don't eat so much at dinner.'

if you drink soup first, you will find that you will eat less at dinner due to the fact that soup fills you up quick.
Its like what they say when you diet, if you have a couple of glasses of water first before meals, you tend to eat less afterward.

It depends on what's in the soup, and what dinner is. The one that is highest in lean protein and lowest in carbohydrates is the best choice. Then skip the other one!
