Go get yourself the Homeopathic Remedy AURUM MET 30C or 200C and take it thrice a day half hour before meals if in 200C just once a day will do before going to bed,Totally Non Addictive,No side effects and complications. And works like a charm. I have yet to see a more efficient remedy for depression.
Take Care and God Bless

L-Tryptophan, the real stuff, not the 5-HTP, might work for you. Only a few manufacturers in the US make real L-Tryptophan. Overseas producers are not allowed to import the stuff into the US after the big 80's controversy regarding tainted L-Tryptophan.
L-Tryptophan was prescribed by many healthcare providers before Prozac was introduced in the 80's. Take at night as it may make you sleepy. L-Tryptophan produced by Lidtke is probably the purest available in the US, but you'll pay $$$$ for it. Don't be tempted to go with the 5-HTP version, it just doest work the same.
L Phenylalanine is also another possibility, but it is used more commonly for depression caused by chronic pain.
Either way, go with the most costly product you can afford. I recommend Lidtke for the Tryptophan and Thorne Research for the L Phenylalanine . Remember, the most expensive supplement is the one that doesn't do anything for you, usually the leastly costly one.

I agree, it would be ideal to see a doctor or therapist, but if you're uninsured and low-income, those options may not be available to you. But yes, there are usually mental health clinics that are free or low-cost. Do look into it. A doctor's office should have a list.
I strongly support two approaches as well: exercise and St. John's Wort. Vigorous physical exercise for 20+ minutes/day is a real mood elevator. Sounds corny but it's true. St. John's Wort is a safe OTC herbal alternative to the SSRIs but is only effective for mild to moderate depression. You call yours severe. Still, it might help you to see the world a little brighter. It's affordable enough to give it a try.

First, go see a therapist. Even, if you cannot afford medication, seeing a therapist will help you. Also, many times drs can give you samples of meds. There are no OTC antidepressants.
Depending on how your depression is, if it is just the blues, try getting out or exercising, that always helps. However, if it is major depression, see a therapist.

Don't give up. I don't know where you live but there must be mental health services that are based on income or are free. I have been fighting this battle for 34 years. If there's anyway I can help message me. I will do what I can to locate help in your area. Never give up. The bad things you are alluding to can sometimes be worse than you might think.

try st johns wort. my gyno recommended it to me for postpartum after my first son. it does have interactions with other medications so you might want to read about it on webmd.com.also it has an accumulative affect so you have to take it for a month to feel the effects of it. the good thing is it's herbal so except for other drug precautions, it's safe. make sure you get the standardized brand. it guarantees a consistent amount in each pill. it gives you a better sense of well-being and lifts the dark veil you constantly feel now so that you can deal better with everything.

Check out Sam-E (short for S-adenosylmethionine). You can buy it in pill form at the drugstore without a prescription. It's been used to treat depression for years in Europe, and more recently in the U.S. A couple of my friends take it daily, and say it works as well as prescription anti-depressants.

Regular exercise is a must. It sure helps me. People also use herbal remedies like St. John's Wort for depression, I find it questionable about whether it is beneficial or not.

The answers are not in a bottle but in changing your outlook on life. Change your habits, behaviors etc. Get enough sleep but not too much, check your diet habits. Change your environment if you need to.
Above all else, be master of your own mind. Don't let it go where it must not.
