Now is a great time, since they need a few weeks to get their new roots established before the ground freezes. Irises are not fussy; give them full sun and they shoould be happy.

BEFORE YOU START, notice how they are growing now. Rather than roots, they have "corms," which grow practically at ground level. Pay attention to how the corms rest on/in the soil, because you want to plant them at the same depth when you move them.

The corms will be all twisted together. You can use a hose to clean them off so you can better see where to separate them. They may pull apart, but if the clump is big and tight, you may have to separate them with a knife. Trust your instincts. As I said, they're pretty forgiving!

I don't know much about plants, but I have had a little experience with Iris's. I think the best time to relocate them would be in the fall. My Iris's like moist soil. Somewhere where it is damp a lot, but not to damp or the bulbs will rot. Bulbs multiply very fast and you should be able to seperate them and plant in different parts of your yard.

You should probably wait at least another month til the weather cools. Dig out the clump with a spade and use a sharp knife to separate the rhizomes. Trim off mushy parts. They don't like to be planted too deeply or else they will get too damp and rot. Cover them loosely with soil, and then with mulch. They like the sun!!

Do you mean bearded iris or siberian iris? Now is ok to moved. If its bearded iris just seperate the rhizomes and plant shallow. They Rhizomes should be showing .The other types. you need to split I use a large sharp knife to cut them as they are very hard to divide. They prefer sunny well drained soil..
