Do you usually apply for graduate school and take the GRE in your senior year of college? And do you take the same GRE for all the departments?

Departments and prospective schools differ in which GRE they want you to take. Most schools require that you take the general GRE and some schools/dept's require or recommend that you take the particular subject GRE as well.

If you plan to apply to grad schools in your sr year of college, it is recommended that you take the GRE in the spring semester of your jr year....this allows you some time to see if you need to take it again. If you do need to take it again (which is common), the latest you should take it is the fall of your sr year. Remember that it takes several weeks for the scores to be printed out and mailed to you and even longer for you to request and send the scores to prospective grad schools.

Applying for grad schools again depends on school, department, and degree. For example, some phd programs have application deadlines around Nov and Dec. some masters programs have deadlines more around Feb and Mar. So it really depends on what you're going for.

Keep in mind, it is always good to be early....with test scores, applications, etc. Also, be checking often on your application status once you've sent in your stuff.

Best wishes for the future. :)

I am taking the GRE the summer before my senior year. That way I don't have to worry about it once classes start again. Plus, if I do badly, then I still have plenty of time to do more studying and retake it. Just make sure you have the results by the time you start applying for grad schools (the application deadlines are usually around January-February)

Good luck!

Your major might have a subject test which you would have to take in addition to the general GRE. So, ask about that.

Try to plan all of your schooling to take the GRE the fall of your senior year and that way you might have to take it over the Spring of your senior year (worse case scenario). If you do things like that, you can devote the summer before your senior year to studying for it.

Take it early.

Good luck.
