I'd believe it. There are many who have no idea who their VP is, so to think they don't know how many states there are is believable.
By the way, you look vaguely familiar.
Update...below is an article you may be referring to.

Unfortunately, I believe that this is a true statement....as a teacher of geography and history, I have seen for myself how little many Americans know about their own country. This is a sad state of being. What is more unbelievable is that many Americans do not have a clue even where their national government is seated; much less the branches of federal government. Many Americans are still blaming the president for the ills of our country....they should really be looking at the Congress for answers, not the president.

Yes I would say so. Here in Hawaii there are soo many people that dont even believe we are a state. When I went to college I was surprised to hear just how many people thought we were the 51st state. I would have to say that 51 and 53 were the most popular number of states I heard.

I think that's false. Most people know there are 50 states. Now knowing how to find them on an untitled map, or the state capitals, is a different story. We're really bad with geography.

It wouldn't surprise me.
I've actually talked to Americans who weren't sure which came first, the civil or the revolutionary war. I recently met Americans who've insisted to me that this is the 20th Century, because the numbers start with two and zero. You have to wonder what century they thought they were in seven years ago.
There is a widespread density in the land. Sad but true. But hey, they're my people (;?)...

I doubt that. Children are taught that in the early grades and it is reinforced in later years.
