During aerobic exercise, people often suffer injuries to knees and other joints due to high accelerations. When do those high accelerations occur?

High acceleration occurs when you change direction. You have to stop motion in one direction and begin motion in another, a deceleration followed immediatly by an acceleration. The overall acceleration is the difference between the two.

So, jump up and land and jump up again (kangaroo), and the deceleration (landing) / acceleration (bounce) is the big change that damages knees. Similarly, run 40 yds, touch the pylon and immediately run back. The deceleration (stop) / acceleration (go back) is the big change putting major stress on your joints.

Hope this helps.

The injury to the knee happens when the shin is going from a high speed to a complete stop. That is a negative acceleration. Using the Newtonian equation Force=massXacceleration, there is force put on the knee when it comes to a complete stop. Because the joining of muscle and ligament is at its weakest in the knee then this is why it happens. There are two types of injuries. The first is fatigue of the flesh. This takes years to happen. This happens with little tears that are microscopically small. The first source listed below has this to say about this. In materials science, fatigue is the progressive and localized structural damage that occurs when a material is subjected to cyclic loading. The maximum stress values are less than the ultimate tensile stress limit, and may be below the yield stress limit of the material. The second method is when the force the knee happens is greater than what is needed to tear a ligament, muscle, or break a bone.

There are two types of aerobic exercise, high impact and low impact. High impact means high accelerations which in turn mean high forces on body parts. Fast running and jumping are examples of high impact aerobic exercises. Moderate walking and swimming are examples of low impact aerobic exercises. Older people and people with osteoporosis should avoid high-impact aerobics, and many gyms have classes that teach low-impact aerobic exercises.

Accelerations is the measure of change in speed in a second. The best example is during aerobic is Running Forward, and suddently Running Backward. Punch your hand forward and keep your hand backward.

Which ever part of our body will suffer injuries but it is all depending on one self's strength to adapt the change in speed in a second.

Actually, fast running is fairly low impact. Jogging is high impact. Jogging downhill is worse. Jumping from a height and landing on your feet without bending your legs is the ultimate. You accelerate your entire mass to zero velocity in a very short distance/time. Don't try this at home ...
