An oxymoron (plural oxymora or, more commonly, oxymorons) (noun) is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms (e.g. "deafening silence") to make a point.

Oxymoron is a Greek term derived from oxy ("sharp") and moros ("dull" or "dumb" ), which means the word is an oxymoron. Another, similar oxymoron is sophomore, meaning "wise fool".

Oxymorons are a proper subset of the expressions called contradiction in terms. What distinguishes oxymora from other paradoxes and contradictions is that they are used intentionally, for rhetorical effect, and the contradiction is only apparent, as the combination of terms provides a novel expression of some concept, such as "cruel to be kind".

An oxymoron is 2 descriptive words side by side for example a common one would be bitter sweet. In a sentence it could possibly be , the men at the ranch happily killed the rats. The reason why this is an oxymoron since killing is seen as morbid and happy is obviously a good thing, therefore an oxymoron is basically 2 words which mean the completely opposite next to each other.
