Seashore communities, such Bahamas or Cancun have a lot of tourists in the summer. Many businesses depend on serving the needs of the tourists. How does the geography of your area affect the local businesses? How does it affect your own lifestyle?

I live in SE Massachusetts and our largest draw in the NE is history. The weather is only nice about 3 months out of the year-if we are lucky. So during that time places like Cape Cod and the Islands draw a lot of tourists so a lot of businesses in those areas cater to the tourists. Travel to these areas after Columbus Day weekend and you will find the side walks have been rolled up. Most businesses are only seasonal. North of Boston the beaches have very little draw and most businesses are the whale watch, charter fishing type. Boston draws tourists with its arts and the history. Plymouth draws people with its history as well. The town I live in has a strong Portuguese influence and alot of the local businesses are run and supported by the Portuguese communities. Some of the larger businesses also draw on the history: Battleship Cove and of course the Lizzie Borden House and Museum.

I live in a California beach community. A lot of the money here comes from tourism, and many of the local businesses sell beach-oriented merchandise like sandals and swimsuits and beach chairs. This only affects my own lifestyle insofar as there are a lot more fun bars and clubs and restaurants available to me than there would be in a non-touristy destination.
