A friend (a nun) wants to get her first laptop (her first computer ever) and has found a good deal on a Dell. Aside from being willing to talk to India when something goes wrong, is there anything she should know about Dells? And what would be a good model to get? And should she buy it online, from Dell directly, or from a different site, or from a retail store?

God bless you, and watch your language! (I know many people hate Dells...)

I have a Dimension 2400 for 8 months, something caused my motherboard to fry, I called the foreign league of tech support with the problem, ( I'm still on a extended warranty plan ), they could not fix it over the phone, Less than 16 hrs, a Technician showed up with a new motherboard, installed and working perfect. Dell is like any other company, when things go wrong folks, look for the first to blame... Microsoft, Sun, Etc. have the same problem as Dell has. I say To Dell. They solved my problem in less than 24 hrs. Get AOL, Microsoft or someone else's support and see if your solution is provided in less than a day..... Go Dell Sister, You will like it, and purchase the extended warranty, mine cost $79.00 and I am sure the Motherboard, and Technician costs Dell Alot more than that.. Good Luck and Godspeed

If you buy a DELL do it through their website, but first sign up for email alerts on deals on dells at their site. Wait until they run a 30% off total purchase deal and then buy it quick. I really would not recommend their laptops at this point but their desktop units are still semi OK. You will need to remove a lot of factory installed junk (I watched my language) including some possible spyware from the software installations. The Dell business class machines from the small and large business units are somewhat better in quality and have less performance sapping software pre-installed, but you will have a harder time getting a "deal".

I don't hate Dells....I have a home network and ALL of my computers are Dells. I have a Dell server, laptop, and a couple of desktop computers. I would buy directly from the Dell website. Under the laptop series, the Inspiron series seems to be the best overall. I have the Inpsiron 1150.

Good luck on your first laptop!

As a loyal Dell customer, I can tell you that Dell's service is the best. And that is LIFETIME service. Your parts are guaranteed for the length of your contract but telephone service is free forever.

I'd buy without hesitation from the Dell web site. They stand behind their products 100%.

The Sony Battery Recall will not affect computers currently being sold by Dell. Now wouldn't it be silly for them to be selling recalled batteries?

You can only buy Dell products online.

Be sure to do some research about the Dell battery recall thing.

If you have lot's of money and patience, go ahead and get a Dell.
Your basic PC's are just that, BASIC. you'd be better off just going to Fry's,Best Buy,or Circuit City and getting something good.
Also, Dell support sucks ***!!
