Because your life has been built around your hometown for a long time... your friends and social activities have been established there, your social support system is there... and suddenly you are dislocated and feeling lost in a new environment. Don't worry, as you gain friends in your new place, you'll feel at home and gradually you'll find life enjoyable in the here and there. Keep in touch with friends back home but do go out and explore and find new friends. That's how all of us expand our horizons--moving into new neighborhoods and getting to know other people.

Moving away from your town makes you lonely because you left your old friends behind and the things that feel comfortable. Now the place where you go doesn't feel so comfortable because you are not used to it.

Leaving your comfort zone always makes you feel more alone than you probably really are.
It takes time to build a new 'history' in a new place and history is what makes us feel a part of the whole.
