Lyn l--i generalized because that's the only way i could ask this question. my intent wasn't to insult or offend. i tried to specify with the (generally) to point out that it is not every single person in europe, but a(n) (general) idea that floats around from europe to the usa and vice versa.

Ev--that has also been my experience in europe. always had a blast and always met amazing people. love going there and never personally worried or encountered any anti-american feelings.

Oklatom--i'm not talking about individuals, i'm talking about general feelings and sentiments that are prevalent in conversation and perception on both sides (europe and usa).

having never personally encountered bitterness or anger, it is even more intriguing to hear why IT IS SAID americans are disliked. isn't that the point of answers.yahoo?

People in Europe generally do not dislike Americans.

People in Europe DO generally dislike American politics, the American government, and American ignorance.

Why? Well, just look at some of the answer you got to your question!

Jealousy? Many countries in Europe have so much higher living standards than the U.S..So, there would be absolutely NO reason for us Europeans to be jealous. In fact, I believe it is more the other way around.

As I look at the questions in the German version of this site, I do find some that include extremely racist elements, offending most users of the site. 80 percent of these questions are posed in English, by Americans.

I do understand that your question was probably not meant as an offense or an insult towards Europeans in any way. However, most Americans should become aware of the fact that they are not the center/police of the world and not superior or something better than ANY other country that exists on this planet, since this way of thinking does definetely not contribute to their popularity.

Watch a bunch of American tourists wandering around in Europe. You could have 20 polite Americans and 1 really obnoxious one. (I'm being generous here.) Who will the locals remember? The obnoxious one. What will they think about Americans? They are all obnoxious. So don't be an obnoxious tourist!
Also, some foreign policies of the States steps on the toes of many European countries, making the country as a whole seam bossy and arrogant.

I have traveled to three different countries in Europe....France, Switzerland, and Italy. Contrary to popular belief, most don't hate us but hate our government. The only ones who hate all Americans in general are the ignorant ones, and those are not my words but the words of an Italian friend. I found all those countries quite friendly and charming, even France (GASP!). lol, Most realize that we can not help what our government does and they realize that the one obnoxious rude person they see does not represent all of America. I have made some very good friends in Italy and nobody has been rude to me because I'm an "ugly" American. I hoped I helped!

Dislike of the French, Germans, Argentinians and human beings is someone-friendly topic in Britain. i do no longer probable comprehend why, I propose, i've got heard each and all the person-friendly motives human beings supply, yet they do no longer probable make lots experience. To be honest i think of lots of the 'criticisms' we British have of alternative international locations are in maximum circumstances stable-humoured (if there is one element you ought to comprehend approximately British way of existence it is that insults are generally meant to place across friendship and familiarity - they seem to be a compliment), yet now and back get taken heavily and re-pronounced with purpose by utilising the ignorant.

u know, i've been to europe twice (france, little bit of italy and switerzland, and monaco and another trip to england, a bit of wales, and ireland) and im going back in april 07 to france and in the summer to italy, and when i was there, i never got any anti-american looks, comments, or felt that i was disliked. however, when ur not face to face w/ them, im sure they dislike us, mostly because the US is the BEST!!! haha, they're just jealous, for ex., in normandy, we walked into a restaurant at 8:00 PM and on the front it said it would close at 9, and they said they would serve to us--we were sooo hungry from driving all day from paris and versailles we decided we were too tired to complain so we just went to a different restaurant and they people at the different place were really nice, they didnt even speak english, i had to translate for my family and i

BUT THINK OF IT THIS WAY: there r alot of europeans that still emigrate to the US, so im sure there r some who still like us

it's not that they dislike them actually but are somewhat irritated by the americans coz of the government power they have. i think it's coz no matter what happens, america gets involved in the European matters without being invited. they seem to want to be involved in every aspect of the world but who can blame them, they are a very powerful nation! the most multi-cultural people make them so rich in everything

What makes you think they do? What is the source of this statement? If people in Europe dislike Americans, why are so many trying to get here?

I'm not one of the people in Europe that dislike Americans. Live and let live . Why do you generalize that we do?

Because they're always lecturing the rest of the world in how they should live, yet get all precious if anyone dares to utter the tiniest bit of criticism of them and their ways.

For the same reason they are disliked everywhere else. They are loud, insensitive and don't respect local customs.
They are the first to scream blue murder if, heaven forbid, they perceive they received no value for money.
