i would like 2 correct that it is not just parenthesis but all grouping symbols that come first meaning brackets, fraction bars, radicals, etc. so if you had 12*25/42+8 you would do 12*25=300
then 42+8=50 then 300/50=6 making 12*25/42+8=6

A good way to remember the order is:

Please (parenthesis)
Excuse (exponents)
My (multiplication)
Dear (division)
Aunt (addition)
Sally (subtraction)

And as said above, always go left to right.

the other two above me are correct, but always remember to ALWAYS go left to right when solving a problem. this will save you a lot of headaches
