Hello,

I am thinking of applying at my local Community College next year and earning a AS in Professional Studies with a total emphasis in Information Technology.

What lines of work can one get into with that degree?
Is IT still a good field to get into?
What types of jobs are out there for entry level IT?
What is the starting entry level salary for that line of work?

I have been trying to do a BA. But I have no trade to speak of. So I am thinking it would be nice to do a AAS in this Information Technology and study really hard. Earn the AAS, get a job in that field. Then go to night school for a BA.

I truly love computers and would greatly desire learning more about them and applying that in a professional setting to the best of my abilities.

I just do not know a great deal about what is out there employment wise in the field of IT.

I totally need a trade because I am getting to old to work crummy jobs and I love computers.

I think you need to do a bit more research into exactly what Information Technology is. IT is a very broad subject and allows for lots of areas in which to specialize: networking, physical/data security, physical/data recovery, operating systems, administration, operations, and help desk. Then you have the developmental side of it where people write and/or enhance the applications or software that businesses rely on to operate. This would require different skills then the aforementioned roles. An Associates Degree is a good place to start as then you can likely obtain a position for an organizations Help Desk and work your way up as you further your education. But do so more digging and talk with your counselor so that you can get on the correct study track. Best of luck.
