I have had both and prefer guinea pigs by far. Hamsters can get very aggressive as they get older. Guinea pigs rarely bite and when they do it doesn't hurt. Guinea pigs can live up to 7 years if they are properly cared for. The problem is that most people don't bother to take the time to learn how to care for them. Hamsters live up to 3 years. Hamsters are easier to care for and don't smell as much as guinea pigs but they are not as fun and you can't really play with them as much as guinea pigs. Here are some great guinea pig sites.

no they don't bite, if u are gentle and get them used to being around people. Guinea pigs live for around 5-8 years and hamsters 2-4 years. I've had both and wud recommend guinea pigs, they are more sociable and are more robust. Although guinea pigs are usually a bit more work.

We had a guinea pig that was so sweet. He never bit us and he was so nice. They typically live 2-5 years if well cared for.

hamsters are biters. We had a dwarf hamster that bit us every time we took her out. We ended up wearing thick gloves to handle her. We got rid of her. Hamsters usually live about a year or so. They are not the nicest pets all the time.

My vote is for a guinea pig!!

If you are looking for a rodent as a pet that is smart and friendly--get a rat. My daughters had a couple of hamsters when they were young. The hamsters always bit, and guinea pigs are noisy. But rats are so friendly. After they got their first rat, that was the only kind of rodent we ever got anymore. We NEVER had one bite. Hamsters would try to get away from the girls when they tried to pick them up, but the rats would actually run to their hands when they put their hands in. They couldn't wait to come out and play. We even had a pair of them one time, that would go exploring when we let them out of the cage, and would come back when you called their names. They are very endearing. The only drawback is they rarely live past 2-3 years.

Do not get a hamster. I got two girls (and I was positive that they were both girls) but somehow a month later I had 38 hamsters instead of my orginal two.
And Guinea Pigs are more good natured than Hamsters. Hamsters are full of TONS of energy and bite like evil little things.

Definatley guinea pigs, between the two, hamsters can be mean little things.

I LOVE rats!! Have you considered one? They are smaller than guinea pigs, and they are much calmer and can be trained too!!
