Both were tragic and damaging incidents. Hurricane Katrina and 9-11, but in your opinion which do believe is the worst and why?

Katrina- because we watched it coming on the news for days and still lost the city. Because neighbors turned their backs on neighbors. Because as it was happening only the negative stories got told- the looting, breaking and entering, etc- not the positive. Because ordinary people who attempted to take leadership roles were silenced while the government response fumbled. Because we were woefully unprepared to deal with an inevitable disaster. Because everyone played the blame game and then didn't want the survivors in their backyard. Because the responsibility of a government is to care for its citizens in crisis or to enable them to care for themsleves and that was not done. Becasue the people who wanted to help could not get connected with the pople who needed help.

At least 9/11 gave people a common enemy, and we acted like we were all in it together. Nobody blamed the victims. The rescue workers were heroes. With Katrina, the heroes' stories never really got told. People out there rescued neighbors, tended the elderly, offered to drive evacuees, donated food and supplies, manned the tents, cooked and served food, trucked in water- and theior stories were lost in the blame game. Katrina showed us at our worst, and taught a huge lesson if we are willing to learn.
