When separating solids in a liquid, you can sometimes use a centrifuge. This will "pellet" the solid to the bottom of the tube. The liquid, which should now be devoid of solids, is called supernatant, or sup for short.

It is what you get when you separate a solution using a centrifuge. Often in a lab to isolate a substance in a solution you will centrifuge it and pour off the supernatant liquid
