Well, I am African American, and when I was growing up, my mom would listen to R&B music. She liked songs from Motown, The Sounds Of Philadelphia and anywhere in between, disco, you name it, that type of music. She would listen to gospel on Sundays and, once in a while, like some country artist like Reba McIntire, Kenny Rogers, The Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Dolly Parton and Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters and Randy Travis. (I pretty much named all of her favorite country artists)
This is what she liked. I like the above mention-not to much with country and not too much with rap, either. I do like the beatles, Van Halen, The Cranberries, Cream, The Association, I am a lover of these types of music as well. Not just one genre.

Glenn Miller, The Dorseys, Les Brown...
They belonged to the "big band" generation...I loved it... and still do.
I remember sitting at the kitchen table as a tyke, just listening to it, and by age 3 was able to identify all the different orchestras on the radio! To tell the truth, I still think it is some of the best music ever written...
I belong to the "Beatle" and Elvis and Motown generation myself, and my kids, in their early 30's, both enjoy all kinds of music.
Afraid to say that the new stuff...rap, etc... is a little beyond my taste and comprehension! I find it too aggresive...especially on the eardrums!
:-D

While I was growing up? I don't really remember, but both my parents liked 80s music. Survivor, Cyndi Lauper, stuff like that I guess.

My mom was really into Stone Temple Pilots and Third Eye Blind. She was always playing their music. I eventually got into them as well.

My dad listened to country, my mom listened to oldies.
I actually liked both then, but don't now.
