I would compare to what they are charging on auction sites.

Take a look at:
http://search.ebay.com/whirlpool-air-conditioner-btu_W0QQfromZR8QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQssPageNameZRC0021
for example.

Some good sites are available as well for research.
http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/item_list/cat00036/8_501_12_500_BTU.html
just do a search like:
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=whirlpool+10000+btu+air+conditioner+watt&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

New they claim that it will be 350. Don't forget to account for shipping and handling that you won't have to pay.

I would think a 10 year old one would not be as energy efficient as a newer model, so the money you save by getting this one will be paid for later in electricity bills. Take a look at the energy star ratings on the appliances that you compare with.

I would think 175 is a bit steep...

Hope that helps.

I am guessing that this is a window unit because i have never seen a whirlpool central a/c unit. I would say that $175 is a little too steep for a unit that is over 10 years old. Just on the fact that the effeciency has declined during its lifetime warrants serious misgivings about buying it for any price.

if he wants 175 make a 115 bid, the point is to agreed on 130-140

A air conditioner from1995 is worth about 45 dollars in this neck of the woods(KY.) but if it is a small one:10,000 or smaller free is what it would be worth here.
